Research Blog: Music video conventions
- For this project, I will be using the song "She Knows" by J. Cole. This song falls under the hip-hop/rap genre.
- A loud, smooth/upbeat tempo, melodic, catchy chorus, energetic, and steady beat is mainly used in this genre. J. Cole's song, "She Knows" utilizes all of these from him saying the phrase "she knows" in the background throughout the song to different instruments used to create the steady beat.
- I decided to watch the official music video in addition to others who have created their own to see how I would make my video.
- There were several tracking and establishing shots to show where the main person is in every setting. In addition to this, it was filmed in several angles to get multiple perspectives including close-ups and long shots.
- The official video uses different sound effects in addition to the song track to create a story used in the music video. There were several different settings that took place interchangeably throughout the video.
- The acting in addition to props and costumes were all used to tell the story.
- The setting and acting are also very useful to the overall theme of the video. It creates a story without words and is very entertaining to the audience.
- The rhetoric device pathos was used throughout the video to evoke emotion in the audience. There was a point of shock in the video where you as a viewer also felt the emotion the person in the story was feeling.
